Suzane Northrop THOUGHTS FROM SUZANE

Spring is slow to begin this year, and has been keeping us waiting on edge for the buds to bloom. Which of course did not take our attention off tax season – April 15th! I don't know how many of you caught it, but on the "Today" show last week there was a minister and a rabbi talking about the "blessings" of taxes! The show made me stop and think for a moment. I had to ask myself, "Am I watching the DVD of ‘The Secret'?" Those who have seen "The Secret" may remember when two folks from the clergy talked about the "tax blessing", and how mainstream spirituality is at an all-time high. Quite frankly, what they said was very inspiring and refreshing, and I believe it was in sync with the rise of a growing community of spiritual awareness. The stats are, at a low estimate, that 80- to 90-million Americans have had some sort of spiritual experience, including ADC's (After Death Communications)! Many spas now offer Yoga, meditation or relaxation classes with emphasis on the mind, body, and spirit.

On a sadder note, I would say that nothing could have prepared us for the tragedy of Virginia Tech. Those losses have left many feeling challenged and questioning (rightfully so) if, truly, "Everything Happens for a Reason".

In going through the physical loss of my 23-year-old nephew, I personally can understand questioning, "How can anyone explain this kind of pain or loss rationally?" That is exactly what every mother, father, aunt, uncle, sister, brother, and friend asks, to try and make sense of something that seems so senseless. To be honest, there are many losses that we would all question that seem senseless, making those loved ones left here wondering if there is a God or justice. Random acts, whatever they may be, leave us feeling sad, helpless and grief-stricken in trying to answer the unanswerable.

I will attempt to share my deepest thoughts about this very sad occurrence. Although I cannot profess to know what the reason is, what I do believe and know is that everything really does happen for a reason. We cannot know nor have all the answers, but I can tell you from everything I know to be true that there is a reason. We may not know what it is now, or ever, unless knowing the reason has some direct effect on us personally. But I can tell you that none of those precious children, or that heroic professor who survived the Holocaust, were lost in spirit. It was a physical loss, and I will emphasize physical loss because their spirits, their presences, their beings will go on, long after their physical deaths. There will be an aftermath of how their lives have touched all of us, because even if we don't know them personally, they have all become a part of our lives. These memories, like 9/11 or the Oklahoma City bombing, are a part of our American consciousnesses. I've said before that each state, country, religion, and yes, families, have their own Karma. I cannot say what everyone and every family's path is, but each path is based in the power of love. These losses in Virginia were not in vain. Those that passed are who I believe to be the special persons that make a difference. They are the ones who we will all remember that touched our souls and hearts in a special way, have somehow paved the way to make a difference. From losses such as these is where the Compassionate Friends, MADD, Megan's Law and countless other organizations have come together to benefit and heal others.

These happenings, I believe, either heal us personally, as a country, or as part of Mother Earth. As difficult as it is, we need to turn around pain and anger and direct that energy into something that will honor those that have made a difference. We are all connected; everyone is connected through the essence of love. The young man who took these actions came from the other side the world, from another continent. As a culture, Americans come from everywhere around the world. As with all changes, we can embrace those differences – because, I believe, that is the strength and beauty of our country. I can't confess to have traveled worldly, but I have been told by many that America is truly one of the most spiritual places on Earth, although we've certainly had more than our share of seemingly senseless tragedies.

I will add one other thought: There were and are many spiritual leaders, from Buddha and Confucius to Jesus. The most important spiritual message from all of them is to be able to forgive. Virginia Tech wants to remain strong in connecting, bonding their union together. If they can find it in their hearts to forgive and keep the spirit of what they want to show to the world, then it is a small feat for us to embrace their wishes. It is from negative events like Virginia Tech, 9/11, and the Oklahoma City bombing that we grow, learn to become stronger, create positive results, and move toward peace as spiritual beings on our own journeys of our soul.

Warmly,
SUZANE ~

Your Questions Answered

The question this month comes from K.J., who asks:

"When a soul ascends to a higher level, why is it so hard for them to come through to the Earth plane? Do they still watch over you from this higher level? Why is it so much harder to feel their presence?"

It is not so much that it is hard for them to come through . . . rather, what I think happens is the longer our loved ones are physically gone, the harder it is for us to feel their presence. However, what I've said over and over again is: the deeper the connection and the more intense the love, the longer their presences are felt. Our beings, or consciousness, can always tap into or connect with us through love, but it is often we who don't get the contact! We are looking for the dramatic, and as you all know, it is not about the dramatic, but rather the little things—those very subtle touches, dreams, the numbers or words on license plates—that let us know that our DP's are in fact near and around us. Don't forget about dates of birthdays, passings and holidays as well – the "DPs" love them!

On a Personal Note

This poem came in a while back and I thought, to end the newsletter, I would share it with you.

THE BUTTERFLY

A butterfly rested upon a flower, Happy was he and light as a flake
And there he met a caterpillar, Sobbing as though his heart would break
It hurt the happy butterfly to see the caterpillar cry
Said he, whatever is the matter and may I help in any way?
I've lost my brother, wept the other, He's been unwell for many a day
Now I discover, sad to tell, He's only a dead and empty shell
Unhappy grub, be done with weeping, Your sickly brother is not dead
His body's stronger and no longer crawls like a worm, but flies instead
He dances through the sunny hours and drinks sweet nectar from the flowers
Away, away, deceitful villain, go to the winds where you belong
I won't be grieving at your leaving so take away your lying tongue
Am I a foolish slug or snail to swallow such a fairy tale?
I'll prove my words and you shall see, Now listen well and look at me
I am none other than your brother alive and well and fancy free
Soon you'll be with me in the skies amongst the flirting butterflies
Oh, cried the mournful caterpillar, 'Tis clear I must be seeing things
You're only a specter sipping nectar flicking your ornamental wings
And talking nonsense by the yard, I will not hear another word
The butterfly gave up the struggle, I have, he said, no more to say
He spread his splendid wings and ascended into the air and few away
And while he fluttered far and wide, the caterpillar sat and cried.

This was posted on my message board, and is in memory of George Dahlgren by his daughter Karen A. Thank you, Karen, for sharing this poem with the board!
