Thoughts From Suzane

Firstly this month, and very importantly, I want to give kudos' to those who corrected me after my June newsletter came out . . . lest I ever forget we have a very eclectic, smart, and well-read group who continue to keep me on my toes! I was promptly corrected of the location where the “Best Friends” Animal Sanctuary is: the correct spelling is Kanab, Utah. To all those who caught it (you know who you are!): a big “Thank You”! I also want to say that I'm very impressed by the dedication of readers: Some have emailed saying they would be checking the Sanctuary out, and a few folks wrote and said they plan on volunteering there! There is even a couple who are going to the “hands on touch” week-long training; please keep us posted of your travels! I'll be back in the area for Labor Day weekend. And just in case you didn't already know, animal communicator Penelope Smith will be on my radio show July 16th, a not-to-be-missed show for all who love our four-legged friends!

I am happy to share that this summer I'm taking my own advice; I have cut my travel schedule and limited most of my travel to around the Northeast. Sometimes it's really nice to not rush here or there and, honestly, just “smell the flowers”! What better time to do this than the summer? Just spending time catching up with friends and family, going to concerts (the perks of having a house near Tanglewood!), reading a book, or just walking along all the beautiful hiking trails in many of the State Parks nearby. And after the long winter, to be able to hike without layers of clothes is a welcome thing! Or how about taking a course at a place like Omega or Kripalu on something you've wanted to do for a long time? This is when it is easy to follow the lead of children; they can't wait to splash in the pool, sleepover with friends or just hang out and enjoy the summer! They are here to teach us adults, who have forgotten the importance of play. It reminds me of something I was told a long time ago: “God loves the children when we work, but God really loves the children who know how to play.”

I have no doubt that the summer can also bring back the memories of our loved ones or DP's. I found myself remembering July 4th, 15 years ago, when my uncle wore that silly hat while showing off his best barbecue recipe . . . only to find out he actually “stole” the recipe from his grandfather! Or my dad trying to teach my mom how to put the worms on the lure he made by hand, and the squirming look on her face! Oh, then there was that time my mother and grandmother took us berry picking. We spent the next day sorting out all best berries for grandma to make jam. And I will never forget the summer my best friend's brother, Steve, died of AIDS. We all decided to spend the summer making a quilt in his memory; it was the most incredible memories and experiences my family ever had together. I know I heard him laughing as I had to re-stitch every patch to my grandma's perfection! The quilt ended up in the window at Saks Fifth Avenue , and I know Steve had a hand in it. If we don't ever take the time to sit and remember those memories, we will lose a very precious moment in our lives and the lives of those we love. Summer is God's way of showing off the beauty of birds, flowers, sunny days, sweet warm rains, and feeling like a child again.

I know that every one of you have those special memories, and I know those are what our beloved DP's want us to remember. They want you to know they are the wind that crosses your face, the butterfly that you see, the flower that smells like perfume, the warm rain that splashes your face, and the sun that reminds you as it is there shining down on you. If you don't make the time now to create the memories, when you have the time, there won't be any memories to remember.

Warmly,

Suzane

Your Questions Answered

This month's question was sent to me from Joan. She asks:

I realize you are very busy, I started listening to you many years ago and then just forgot about you. My dog recently died of cancer and less than a week later I get your newsletter about Best Friends. When I purchased your tape, you sent me "Everything for a Reason" and I never read it. Then after my dog dies the book just appears again. Okay I'm not totally dense, I'm reading the book, I'm logging my dreams, I'm trying to let my right side lead (I'm IT not an easy task).

But please tell me do you know if my dog is ok now? I just can not stop crying (sily huh?) Thank you in advance.

Joan,

You have my warmest thoughts for the lost of your precious doggie. I know personally how difficult these losses can be. I also know unless one is a "animal lover" it is not something everyone can understand or be supportive of. However, I know there are many who read my newsletter who feel as you do and would without question be lovingly supportive and understanding of your loss.

I am a firm believer, "Everything Does Happen for a Reason". Naturally, it's why I title my book so appropriately. I don't think there is any coincidence about finding the book again, especially right after your dog's passing, and right after the newsletter so aptly referencing "Best Friends". Coincidence is God's way of remaining anonymous, but your doggie very much wanted you to know he/she is ok, out of pain and the cancer is gone. These events are not coincidental, they are the very way you are told that love continues and clearly his/her way of letting you know he is still around you.

You are not dense at all, just missing that dear being with whom you shared your life so lovingly. Keep your dreams open, and ask her/him to give you signs in ways you can receive them. Keep the faith and know that love never dies.

Warmly, Suzane

On a Personal Note

This poem was forwarded to me by Jess, who originally received it from her mom. It was written by the CEO of the “Philosophy” cosmetics company. The poem was originally printed on the bottle of Philosophy's fragrance, “Inner Grace”, which was inspired by Dana Reeve:

she has a face of light
and is the calm within the depth of any storm.
gentle stranger, earth angel
without ego or expectation
only dreams and hope for those she loves,
and she loves many...
but many more love and adore her.
when our hope is lost, it is her smile,
her indifference to all fear and chaos
that opens each of us to the greatest love of all.
her love and legacy teaches us only
what we should give, not what we can take.
her inner grace is our light in the dark,
her flame is eternal.

As Jess and her mom both said, this poem truly can apply to the “Earth Angels” that walk among us.
